Hanyang Hospital fight for the supply of materials with the help of private enterprises

“Hanyang Hospital, upgraded to a “clean hospital” from a COVID-19 designated one, has been able to replace the closed suction tubes every 3 days for three months.", said Wanglin Hu, head nurse of the neurosurgery department in Hanyang Hospital. He introduced that the treatment for the infected patients requires tracheotomy and intubation. To prevent the harm of aerosols, the closed suction tubes must be replaced every three days, which is impossible for most hospitals in the case of very limited medical supplies. However, Hanyang Hospital, as a private hospital, did quite a good job.

Hanyang Hospital, as the first batch of referral hospitals, keeps all of its departments operating at high load, ever since its upgrade from the COVID-19 designated hospital to a "clean hospital" one on February 27. Over the past month, although patients with cerebral hemorrhage and brain trauma have exploded, Hanyang Hospital has always been“on-demand”with adequate medical materials sufficient for over 60 emergency cases and abundant clinical supplies. The orderly and efficient management of Hanyang Hospital can only be achieved by a well-organized medical logistics department and with great help from the flexible and efficient private enterprises.

Flexible and efficient in medical supplies despite all the difficulties

On New Year's Eve, hand disinfectant was in desperate shortage in most hospitals in Wuhan. After many inquiries, Liaoyuan Xu, an employee at the supply center of Hanyang Hospital, learned that there was still a small amount of inventory in Longtai Medical Industrial Park in Huzhou, Zhejiang, so he took 250,000 yuan in cash and a hospital certificate, rushing to Huzhou that night. In order to save time, he ate and slept in the car. After traveling 1500 kilometers back and forth in 32 hours, he finally brought back 2016 bottles of hand disinfectant for the hospital on New Year's Day.

Behind the rapid purchase with cash is the embodiment of company's flexible and

efficient management. "At the beginning of the epidemic, the demand for medical

surgical masks in the hospital increased from less than 100 to 400 to 500 per day. Protective materials, like N95 masks, isolation protective clothing, and surgical masks were all in great shortage.", said Fei Zhang, the president of Herun Medical Group owned by Hanyang Hospital. Herun Group, then, held an emergency meeting and adjusted the conventional procurement process of “planning declaration—project approval—price approval—execution procurement”, aiming to secure the special funds, mobilize all the social powers to collect protective materials and require all channels to reserve medicines, consumables, equipment, and other medical supplies as well as groceries such as rice, noodles, and vegetables for Hanyang Hospital.

Liaoyuan Xu introduced that he had taken the goods from a locked warehouse with the supplier’s permission. Efficient and flexible management has enabled Hanyang Hospital to purchase the first batch of valuable medical supplies at the critical time, with which the medical staff in the forefront can finally fight on the battlefield without worries.

Make the best use of everything and leave the best to the forefront

“I chose to go first to the most seriously-infected area all by myself, so that others can be safe from infection and save medical materials to the greatest extent. Once I am infected, someone can replace me.” In order to provide as much service as possible to the infected patients, Hanyang Hospital established 7 wards of the Department of Respiratory Medicine in the shortest time, and delivered a large number of protective materials and medicines to the high-risk areas. Fei Xiao, the head of the consumables team of the supply center, offered to deliver materials to all the respiratory wards alone. Each of his team members have worked for more than 14 hours a day in the warehouse to keep the supply chain running for 24 hours a day.

Soon after Hanyang Hospital was converted into a COVID-19 designated hospital, a large number of fever patients flowed in, causing a critical shortage of protective materials among the front departments. Then, after its announcing for more materials, Hanyang Hospital received donations from governments at all levels and social powers. Jun Li, the manager of supply center, formed a special team immediately and asked the team members to track and receive the donations in a one-for-one way.“N95 masks are only for the medical personnel in high-risk infected areas. There is no other choice but disposable medical masks left for administrative and logistics personnel.”, said Jun Li. He also added that, the supply center must check the donated protective materials of all kinds in a strict way to make sure they meet the medical health standard and the best and safest ones should be sent to those in the forefront.

Work tirelessly for endless logistic supplies

“Now, medical staff are working in the forefront without any rest for the infected patents. It is our duty to work tirelessly for their safety.”, said Ying Zhao, director of the logistic office and a mother of two children. Since the donated materials from other places often arrived late at night, in order to unload them on time, she and the logistics minister, Hua Ren chose to sleep in their offices. Every night, she could only lay down for a short amount of time before receiving a phone call and rushing to unload supplies. She, together with her male colleagues, handled various materials every day, including very heavy ones, like a big of rice that can weigh 50 pounds.

Frightened by the serious epidemic and lockdown, more than 60% cleaning workers quit their jobs, which caused critical staff shortage in logistics department. Under such circumstance, the administrators of logistics offered to do the cleaning job in the public area. Xixiang Yi, deputy general manager of Herun Medical, persuaded more than 10 fellows from his hometown to work in the hospital. During the work, the workers got to know each other better, and have changed their attitude from resisting the job to taking the initiative to work hard.

“No more people lose their families! I should fight like a soldier, instead of a deserter!”, said Mingyue Yang from the security department. Although his wife died of myocardial infarction after the lockdown, he stuck to his post and sanitized the medical staff when they were back home. Deeply touched by his spirit, other security workers in the hospital offered to guide and organize the patients to emergency departments, physical examination center and fever department, regardless of their own life safety.

It is reported that in the first quarter of this year, Hanyang Hospital has admitted 518 patients with COVID-19 and opened its general departments, emergency department and fever department to treat more than 80,000 patients. Fen Zhang said that during the epidemic, over 900 medical staff had been fighting against the virus. Meanwhile, more than 140 logistic workers have stayed in their positions as well.
